Optional Combat Rules
Optional Combat Rules
(Note that these rules are not optional if in an official PvP tournament type setting)
Have you ever wanted your character’s attributes and spells that you’ve so lovingly crafted to matter more? Well, here’s your chance to show off what you’ve got. The following is a completely optional set of rules that you can use when you want to fight another character:
Attributes
So what do attributes mean when you’re using these rules? Each attribute has its own use, with higher attributes showing off a character’s greater abilities.
Power: Power determines how much damage your character does. You add Power to every ability that deals damage. This includes regular weapons and holder weapons. regular unarmed attacks deal damage equal to your power.
Agility: Agility measures a character’s ability to hit with attacks and avoid being hit by an opponent’s attacks. You roll a number of dice when making an attack equal to your agility and the speed of your weapon or spell. You roll a number of dice equal to your agility when defending from attacks, both magical and physical.
Toughness: Toughness is how resistant to damage your character is. When hit by a non-magical attack, you resist damage equal to your toughness plus the power of your defensive spell and/or armor.
Intelligence: Intelligence is how talented your character is with the magic they wield. When using a spell to attack, roll a number of dice equal to your intelligence plus the spell’s speed.
Willpower: Willpower acts like toughness when resisting damage from spells. You roll willpower plus the power any defensive spells when resisting magical attacks.
The rules
The rules are relatively simple overall, once you get used to them.
Attacking
Note that you may make no more than one attack per post using these rules (For fairness.)
When you attack, you roll a number of combat dice equal to your character’s agility, adding the speed rating of a weapon or spell. When you defend, you roll a number of combat dice equal to your character’s agility alone. In order to have people able to react properly to the outcome, the attacker should roll the proper amount of dice for both attacker and defender. (Don't forget to add in buffs if applicable!)
Attacker has more successes: Attacker hits the opponent
Defender has more successes: Defender avoids the attack
If anyone gets 0 success, they automatically fail. If both parties get 0 successes, the defender is not struck by an attack.
Dealing Damage (and Taking It)
When you deal damage, you add your power to either the spell or the weapon. Each * is worth 10 points of damage. When you take damage, you subtract your toughness (or willpower if it’s a spell) and your armor (either from a magical shield or physical armor).
An attack deals a minimum of 10 damage to a character’s wound points, unless the damage is prevented by a magical shield.
If not fighting to the death, a character’s WP stops at 1 instead of 0, no matter how much damage they take.
